HOW WE DIDN'T MAKE IT BLACK.

Seven things we decided not to add. Including the cheap way to make something black.

No Paint

The black is PVD — Physical Vapour Deposition — the same bonded finish used in high-end watchmaking. It is not a layer sitting on top of the steel; it is fused into the surface. Painted finishes chip at the working edge within months. This one does not.

No Electroplating

Electroplated black finishes are thin, soft, and wear back to silver exactly where the scraper meets your tongue. PVD is significantly harder and food-safe throughout.

No Plastic in the Scraper

Medical-grade stainless steel core. The dual-layer construction supplies the flex, so no plastic is needed to get it. The travel case is plastic; the scraper is not

No Bristles

A flexing steel edge follows your tongue's curve and lifts the coating in one pass. Bristles bridge it.

Q: Will the black coating chip or peel?

PVD coating is significantly harder than standard paint or electroplating. Under normal daily use, it will not chip or peel. Aggressive abrasion or harsh chemicals could damage it. Don't do that.

Q: Is the black coating food-safe?

Yes. PVD coating is food-safe and widely used in food-contact applications. Brief daily contact with your tongue presents no risk.

Q: What does the two-layer construction actually do?

It adds controlled flex to the arch. A rigid scraper bridges the natural curve of your tongue, only contacting the highest points. The two-layer design flexes into the curve, maintaining contact across the full surface.

Q: How is this different from the standard stainless steel scraper?

Same base material. Two differences: PVD black coating for aesthetics and surface hardness, and the two-layer flex construction for improved tongue contour contact. If you want the original, buy the original. This one has better coverage and looks deliberate on your counter.

Q: Can I put it in the dishwasher?
